Project B&B Green Applies for Pepsi Refresh Project

Unlike most of the depressing stuff that’s usually on the news, this morning I was pleasantly surprised to see Kevin Bacon on the Today’s Show promoting the Pepsi Refresh Project.

Pepsi Refresh Project encourages individuals, business, and non profits (anyone can apply under certain restrictions) to submit ideas that simply strive to have a positive impact.

I have submitted Project B&B Green for a $250,000 grant which hopefully will be reviewed and approved for voting.

If my application is submitted, voting will begin on March 1st. I’ll keep you posted!

To SCORE or not to SCORE?

Text to John: “That guy might as well have just meet me in the kitchen this morning and pissed in my Cheerios.”

When someone starts off a conversation with, “I don’t mean to rain on your parade…” you know it’s not going to be good. My first experience with the retired executive at SCORE, giving start-up business advice, was discouraging to say the least. I somehow manage to be paired with the only retired exec to have invested in a failed B&B in California. Obviously… Can I exchange my surly exec for a less cynical model? I thought old people liked B&Bs… Guess not.

Nonetheless, I’m trying to remain confident and not let gruff attitudes and a previous 40 tumultuous years in the business world get in the way of my hopes and dreams.

So instead of giving up, I do what any passionate business woman would do, and I go find someone to put the wind back in my sails. My 2nd SCORE exec was still old, and retired, but not nearly as stale. Could it have been the cheap Joyce Leslie knock off Blue Blockers, with gold star decal on the side that won me over? Perhaps. Either way, he gave me sometime to talk, and more importantly he listened.

Hey, I get it, I’m crazy, have no expereince, and absolutely no money, but… as Warren puts it, “When you got nothin, ya got nothin to lose?”

And so it begins…

Today is the official start to Project B&B Green. Although the fundamental ideas of the project have been keeping me up at night for nearly 6 months, today I’ll pay a visit to the NYC chapter of the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) to assess my progress so far. SCORE the “Counselors of America’s Small Business Owners” is a national association dedicated to helping small business owners form and grow their businesses.

Sadly, I feel like I’m living a scene from Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, pretending to be a seasoned business woman discussing things like business planning, incorporating as an LLC, commercial loans, and long term goals.

Do you have some sort of business woman special… yeah, cause we’re like business women.

I feel confident with myself, but not stupid enough to think I can take this project on without help from the experts. Perhaps I’m already in over my head, but my heart tells me I’m onto something really special.
